This webinar will review some common herbs of commerce that are threatened, endangered, or otherwise of dubious sustainability that have very similar substitutes from local bioregions in the US. Substitutes will focus on Pacific Northwestern and Sonoran desert (southwestern US) alternatives. Some of the herbs to discuss substitutes for include Panax ginseng and Panax quinquefolius (Asian and American ginseng), Hydrastis canadensis (goldenseal), Tabebuia spp (pau d'arco), Commiphora molmol (myrrh), Boswellia spp (frankincense), Harpagophytum procumbens (devil's claw), Prunus africanum (pygeum)
Eric Yarnell, ND, RH(AHG) (Bastyr '96) is associate professor in the department of botanical medicine at Bastyr University and president of Heron Botanicals. He studied Sonoran desert herbs intensively with Silena Heron, ND, RN during a two-year residency in Sedona, AZ He is former chair of the department of botanical medicine at the Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine. He has extensively studied the flora of the Pacific Northwest and taught numerous medicinal field botany and plant identification courses in the area for over 10 years. In his private practice he focuses on urology, nephrology, and men's health, using individualized formulas featured native plants as a major treatment modality. He is author and co-author of numerous articles and textbooks including Clinical Botanical Medicine 2nd ed and Natural Approach to Gastroenterology 2nd ed.
